HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY EVERYONE!

The COOK is in the house!!!

Did you ever wonder how Sugar Philly made some of their desserts? Well guess what? You weren’t the only one!

Team Sugar Philly actually was able to offer a dessert making class at the wonderful COOK kitchen started by Audrey Claire. The kitchen (and obviously the people) were amazing not to mention the beautiful windows to see people passing by, great collection of cooking books on the shelves, and the best little pantry of kitchen essentials (we miss you glass milk carton!). But what is a perfect setting without the perfect star. Chef Tang was like a celebrity chef blazing through 3 of our recipes and a few of our secrets while sharing a few stories. Most importantly though we hope everyone had a good time, learned something new, and got a little taste of heaven.

Check out a little bit of the fun:

We aren’t the only ones that teach at COOK though! They have amazing classes and some sell out quick. Their January schedule just got released so check out more classes from COOK here.

2011 Annual Dessert Throwdown Went Down!

We forgot to post the event on our blog, but the 2nd Annual Sugar High Showdown with Penn Gastronomy went down last weekend before the Thanksgiving break.  This time all three of us were there to help out with the judging.  It’s a hard job, but someone has to taste all the desserts and figure out how they taste! It was a great event and we had a great time. Everyone did a great job again this year.  We can already tell that it’s going to get harder and harder each year to choose the winners.  This year it went to: Judge’s Choice: Indian Spiced Sticky Toffee Pudding, Kimberly Schreiber Audience Favorite: Chai Tres Leches Cake with Almond Brittle; Crystal Lu For those that missed the event, check out the food porn here!

#givingissweet (Pumpkin Custard is BACK!)

yes, its fall. kinda. (snow and then 70 degrees……..) but we still felt it was time to bring back our beloved fall-y dessert (starting thursday 11/10)

Pumpkin Custard with Candied Pecan and Oats with Torched Marshmallow (YUM!)

but a special announcement with this one is that we have partnered with Givology @ Penn to do a little awareness project.  here’s how to get involved:

Remember, snap a picture of our Pumpkin Custard with your brand new iPhone 4S and throw #givingissweet on a tweet to @sugarphilly & @givology for a chance to win! (facebook too!)

Got it? GOOD!

The UC Food Truck Guide

University City has a great number of awesome food trucks. In fact, one of them was the center of my life for two years, dishing my lunch and dinner to me almost every day. Sometimes though you just don’t know about all the trucks that are out there. Thankfully, UWISHUNU, with the help of Penn Appetit, have put together a nice little guide for the trucks to look out for. Guess what? Sugar Philly is one of the top picks!  We’ve put a link in our press section, but check the article out here.

Field Trip: NYC Vendy’s

I know some of you went to the Piazza for when we were competing in the Vendy’s here in Philly. It was a great time and we had a blast! Did you?

Well we are going to the Vendy’s again!!! But this time we aren’t competing but just spectating. It’s September and the New York City Vendy’s has finally “rolled” in. It’s this weekend on Governor’s Island! All three of us will be attending to see what the Big Apple trucks can cook up and see some of our other food truck friends. Of course, if anyone wants to join us, definitely feel free to! We’d love to meet up and try some food and desserts with you! We’ll be the Philly team and represent our city of brotherly love! See you there!

And We’re Back.

Vacation is over, Sugar Philly is back and hopefully as prepared as we are going to be for the fall!

Everybody ready for school, work, and the chaos of life?

We certainly aren’t!  Haha

Ohh well, we will live and move on.  Enjoy this picture of our milk and honey macaron!

Time to sleep for me!  Until tomorrow, laters!

SP Work Vaca… Part 4/end

Truck friends then family

If any of you really know me, I am not the biggest fan of taking pictures of food.  I find it a bit weird, food is meant to be eaten not fantasized over.  These are the tacos from the food truck Cucina Zapata, who happened to start their twitter today.  Hurrah!  Anyway, I forgot to take a picture their truck while I was there so their thai tacos will have to do.

Owning and running a food truck can get indeed overwhelming to say the least.  Luckily the community of food trucks its probably one of the biggest perks of owning a food truck.  Obviously there’s exchange of food involved, but there’s a comradery in the struggle of food costs, licences and permits, customer relations good and bad, the list goes on and on.  Cucina Zapata is probably one of our newest friends, so go try them out!  They are located on 31st and ludlow on Drexel’s campus.

And I guess in a nutshell those are the basics of running a food truck and life at Sugar Philly.  Although quite the headache at times, there are always good moments that even out the bad.

As I am writing this, I am back at home in Long Island, New York(who said I was from the city?…) This is where I’ll be spending the remainder of my vacation with my family.

We will return to the streets on Tuesday, Sept 6th!  Until then, leave me alone!  Haha =)

SP Work Vaca… Part 3

Back in the kitchen

Finally after 2 days of doing logistics in front of the computer and running errands, I can do what I like doing the most about my job, baking.

Kind of wild how it all started for me.  It all began with me moving into this apartment with some friends, some old bread, sharing what I made with people, and following the feeling that I made people happy.  And now its 7 – 8 years later.

Green tea buttercream anyone?

Actually, I should really correct my first statement, “I can do what I like doing the most about my job, baking.”  It’s really the second thing I like doing about my job, the first would serving everyone and seeing their lovely smile.

If you would like to make me happy in the truck, try smiling.  It certainly makes my day every time.

SP Work Vaca… Part 2

The Team

It’s my personal belief that Sugar Philly works because of the team we have created. Despite what many of you have seen from the truck, there’s quite a bit of people behind the scenes. There are 3 partners(myself, john, and franklin), 2 interns, 1 on and off again intern, and 1 guy that’s been doing the photos.

The image above may seem a little random, but factor in that this is not my car.  In fact its my intern’s car who’s a dude that put that hello kitty there before he started dating his gf. Why the hello kitty you ask? I don’t really know, but these are the strange people that have become the SP team or as I like to call it, the Sugar Philly Family.

Behind me were boxes of eggs, cream, sugar, dairy, the list goes on and on. The reason why I posted that picture instead of the car loaded up with everything is because without the people I work with, none of that would be possible. And more importantly without the people that I work with, things wouldn’t be fun.

And isn’t fun what its all about?

See ya tomorrowwwwww!
